Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 13

Noticed today that the petrol at our local garage had gone up 2p per litre since Mr A filled up 2 days ago. Was wondering aloud whether we should start stocking up with toilet rolls and tinned tomatoes. Mr A just laughed. We've loads of both. We have oil central heating and guess what? The price has...

Re: Prepping homes for COLD weather

Round here, most people have oil, electric or LPG central heating/storage heaters along with secondary heating from open fires or woodstoves. Yes, on still days you can see the smoke rising from the chimneys. In case of electricity failure we would use the woodstove to heat our living room and could...

Re: Straw Poll. How much food do you have in reserve?

Chez Ara we could manage a month easily and probably 3 months if necessary. By then the menus would be becoming strange. When Covid struck we nearly ran out of tinned tomatoes so we probably stock about 6 months' worth now. Note that I said we nearly ran out of them, not actually ran out. I'm quite ...

Re: Jenny Makes Bread!

Sometimes I find kneading it for a longer time stops it sticking to my fingers but I've never kneaded it for 20 minutes. I also use strong plain flour rather than the ordinary stuff. If I only have plain flour I tend to make soda bread although I rarely use the buttermilk all the recipes seem to rec...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 12

When we moved here we couldn't find a NHS dentist to take us even thought the nearest one is only a mile away. Even the private one has a waiting list now as they are so much in demand. I had a crown fitted 25 years ago and our dentist tells me they are only supposed to last 10 years. It cost me £65...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 12

Bins blew over yesterday evening so Mr A pushed them together to avoid getting rubbish everywhere. There are a few medium sized branches down in the village and a bit of litter I picked up but the usual dog walk along an old railway track will have to wait until tomorrow as I didn't fancy being hit ...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 12

This week it's time to get the chimney swept (Wednesday) and have the boiler serviced (Friday). The boiler is in a useful shelved cupboard but apart from the ironing board, step stool and carpet washer, I also keep quite a lot of my non-perishable preps in there. They will have to be temporarily reh...

Re: Allotment: Woo Hoooo!!! :) :) :)

Mr A bought me a fig tree about 4 years ago. It usually started off with some tiny figs in spring but they fell off before ripening. That is, until this year. I finally had 2 figs from it. They were tiny but very yummy. Medusa, there is a saying which goes: "walnuts and pears you grow for your ...

Re: Water (lack of)

It rained last night. Not a huge amount but enough to start filling the butts. I don't need to fill and leave my watering cans at present then. Thanks for the info Forge.
