Re: What about this?

I read this article the other day, it looks like a great place and i love the idea of them taking it upon themselves, via the guy who makes wind turbines, to set up their offgrid power, that guy is a real assest to the community. I already live pretty remote (600 people on the island i live on) but,...

Re: chickens.... help

I have kept chickens and ducks for four years now. We keep a cockeral/drake and each year the offspring go in the freezer. I always had a real problem with the killing part, mainly because I didn't feel like I could garuntee a quick and painless end, this made me nervous so my other half would do th...

Re: Silage advice needed

I don't leave it to dry I just 'bale' it straight away. I know when making normal silage it is usually left for a period before baling. It doesn't seem to be nessesary when using grass clippings, I've never had silage thats been too wet.

Re: Silage advice needed

Well, that was a disaster! What an awful year for farming. I am lucky that it wasn't so bad up her that the grass turned brown and scorched but it was so dry this summer that there was little or no grass growth. In a normal year I would cut my lawn every two to three weeks and make a few tubs of sil...

Re: Root cellars

I have thought about it before now. I've seen ones that are as basic as an old chest freezer buried in the ground or big walk in undergroud storage sheds! What has made me consider one is the fact that it is very humid here which means anything stored in sheds or whereever gets damp and moldy. I hav...

Re: SHTF: What Would You Grow In Your Garden?

I think it would be difficult to grow enough carbs if shtf. Poatoes would abviously be vital as few people would be able to grow cereals. But what happens if blight destroys your crop? Alternatives might be jerusalem artichokes, sweet potato if you had a tunnel. Anyone else have any ideas?

Re: FLEAS!

We have noticed a huge flea problem this year. It's not unusual for the cat to get them and need treating but we have had to treat both cats and dogs several times this year. I know it's bad because one of our ducks nests was crawling with fleas, very unusual for ducks to be affected. We also had a ...

Re: Lidl selling 5Kg boxes of fruit & veg for £1.50

This is an excellent idea and something all supermarkets should do. Even if the stuff ends up only being good for soup, I'd definitely pay £1.50 for 5kg of fruit and veg. It's worth it even if half goes in the compost! Shame I don't have Lidl down the road

Re: Micro Greens?

you would need a large volume to make a soup? I would suggest they are best just eaten raw as a side to other meals. By not cooking them you are retaining all of the nutritional content which is the biggest reason for bothering to do them, each one is a powerhouse of micro nutrients.
