Re: Advice for a hopeless gardener

A few questions for onion growing preppers, especially Jansman... Q1. I found what I believe to be an allium leaf miner larva in a couple of the spring onions. How can I control that if it's also already found its way into my perennial tree onions? We ( wife does it now) simply get clusters of seed...

Re: Advice for a hopeless gardener

A few questions for onion growing preppers, especially Jansman... I have a bed just for Egyptian Tree Onions as recommended by Jansman. They are pretty well established with about 10 growing plants. They's been mostly un-harvested since planting a couple of years back. Left to do their thing. Within...

Re: Why I Prep: Hope.... Not The Apocalypse!

When people hear the term "prepping," their minds often leap straight to doomsday scenarios – zombie apocalypses, nuclear winters, or the collapse of civilisation as we know it. However, prepping isn't just about stockpiling canned goods and building underground bunkers. It's about being ...

Re: Pallet Wood quality Question

How's the shed repair going? It might seem a dull topic for some but I'm eager to see the progress. Probably a carpenter thing... Well.... Rain and other commitments stopped play a little, but it's going well. The floor has now been cut away completely and three of the sides have been repaired. We ...

Re: Value Range foods compared

Just a quick comparison of tinned Minced Beef and Onion, bought for the extended pantry. Nominally 400g cans... First, comparing key ingredients surprised me... Oh hum. What about nutrition per 100g Calories Protein Fat Salt Princes 102kCal 7.9g 6.0g 0.79g Bramwells 124kCal 14.6g 5.3g 0.66g Tesco 1...

Re: Value Range foods compared

I use the handy bit of the shelf price label that lists price per Kilo or per 100g. >£10 per Kilo, it better be something nice, to justify it's space in my basket. Yep. £5 is better. I suppose it also depends on energy density, nutrition, whether it's dehydrated etc. Eg anything dehydrated, you get...

Re: Value Range foods compared

Aldi breaded fish, 4, 500g, £2.50. Gone up in price a bit, but still great value. Compared to Quorn Escalopes on offer at Sains, 38p cheaper, but only 230g. Remember, a cauliflower double the diameter is 8 times bigger! A pizza double the diameter is 4 times bigger. Agreed. The ALDI fish offerings ...

Re: Advice for a hopeless gardener

I have not been terribly impressed with the coir either. Apparently it is naturally very alkaline and needs to have been correctly treated to reduce this - which does not apply to the cheap stuff. This year I have had a couple of bags of the same seed & cutting compost used by our local nursery...

Re: Advice for a hopeless gardener

Blight is an issue right now, both domestically and nationally too. The potatoes coming from shops are far from the best, and that’s an understatement! It’s rather interesting that the self setting spuds in our heaps are doing ok right now though.Looking at news Mrs J has made sure we have tinned spu...

Re: Advice for a hopeless gardener

Thanks. Blightspy seems to say it shouldn't be blight YET https://blightspy.huttonltd.com/#/forecast I'll monitor the situation and report back. OK..... So Who likes spuds? Or more specifically what critter has been chowing down on the foliage of my spud plants. About 1/3 of crop growing just fine ...
