Re: Bugging-in Boredom blasted away by brilliant Boardgames

I can certainly vouch for Carcasonne and Talisman as good fun family strategy-based games, not too much for kids (at least mid-primary school up) to grasp. (Carcassone has several expansion packs to vary things). Worth having a few old ones like Risk, Scrabble and Monopoly - they don't take up much ...

Re: Building your own home

At your stage of life (with a new baby, our first) a friend suggested doing a self-build in tandem. It's cheaper to get land if 2+ families pitch in, perhaps allowing you to stay in the current place while the new place is being built. Might be worth considering for you. I kind of regret not doing it.

Re: Would you move?

Wulfshead, I think it sounds amazing. As you said, the problem of a more restricted set of things that you could grow are outweighed by the larger amount of land and availability of hunting, wood and mushrooming. The opportunity to have a custom built property sounds great too. The medical issue and...

Re: Would you move?

But property in the States is much cheaper Have thought about selling up here and moving to the U.S. myself but my wife isn't keen on the idea even when presented with a rural house and 20 acres of land for around 70,000 in UK money Think she knows we would just end up with 20 acres of V8 classic A...

Re: Mini ice age coming?

Also, I agree with this from the comments on the original article: "The conclusion that we are heading into a new ice age was drawn by the reporter, not a scientist. The dead giveaway is that she does not quote any scientist or cite any scientific paper." Yes there will be a solar minimum,...

Re: Mini ice age coming?

Spot on. Human activity has already pushed us so far out from the 'norm' that there is no chance of a mini ice age. Actually, that is not quite true. The mild climate you have in the UK and the warm summers in this subartic region, is due to the Gulf stream. Saltwater weighs more than fresh water, ...

Re: Mini ice age coming?

This solar minimum is happening at the same time as we are having the hottest years in recorded history. When the Sun comes back to full power we will be wishing we'd left all that fossil fuel in the ground. Spot on. Human activity has already pushed us so far out from the 'norm' that there is no c...
