Re: Which radio?

As posted I passed Foundation and am doing Intermediate in March. I am looking to cover both HF and VHF bands. Any suggestions as to choice of transceiver? 4 children means money is an issue. Not got a huge garden so antennae have to be discrete and space is at a premium so no big shack. Trying to ...

Re: Candles

How about a oil candle? Called a canoil, they burn kerosene. I got the optional heater ring - it will make water hot enough for a cuppa - takes 20 mins to heat 8 oz of water.

Fun stuff, but no longer sold...

We here in the Colonies have a few sects that eschew modern devices. Lehman's has nearly everything for off-grid/no electricity .

Some of these may be available in the UK. Interesting to look at anyway.

Re: parrafin and other heating options?

Even obsolete wicks can be had, often at reasonable prices. This fellow (link below) has the most information on Kero heaters and the care of same that I have seen on the Web. Lots of images and drawings on how to set up, use and store these heaters. The site owner also wells wicks and related items...

Re: Folding camp beds anyone?

Hi, Looking to get 2 maybe 3 of these, has anyone got any recommendations on buying one, a decent one too. Thanks Having spent too many nights sleeping on one of these (called 'cots' here in the colonies) may I suggest picking up some wool blankets to go over the camp bed and allowed to hang down t...

Re: Modify an Esbit stove

Although it's not great for items of large weight, the Esbit is designed to half-open at 45° for smaller diameter containers - the inside-rear jaw of your 2nd photo shows this. That said - I like your mod, OP and will spare a couple of tentpegs/nails to give it a try ^^ cheers Jeggie. Wizard! You c...

Re: Modify an Esbit stove

is there any difference in this that is better than the gelert version? also 20 mins to boil 900 ml of water on the gelert is that about average? Water is funny - it's all about mass. If you put 1 cup (`230mL) in a wide bottom pot, one tab will boil the water and still keep going 2 cups (~470 mL) a...
