Which one Jansman? There's a dozen on that page.

Re: Container gardening

I did a write-up of a container gardening course I attended with Mark Ridsdill Smith of vertical veg - search the site for it. Watering is key - containers warm up and lose water very quickly and the foliage prevents rainwater from filling the pots. You'll find yourself watering even when it's raini...

Re: What do you value most?

My WW2 history book explained that tea was going to be rebranded to a "national brand" as was done for other rationed goods but there was such an outcry that they had to abandon the idea and let people continue to buy their favourite blend in order to maintain morale. I have seen a refere...

Re: What made you become a prepper?

I've always been a prepper I think. As a kid I had a First Aid kit and "emergency rations" squirrelled away. Was always interested in survival skills, nature, woodcraft, but also in emergency response. I think there's a few impulses that led to my current prep situation: - Being the oldest...

Re: Eat like a Peasant?

UK GDP was USD5000 or so in 1900 - this translates to an enormous USD150,000 at today's prices. Yet the working class could barely put bread on the table. Who got all the money then? (ETA "politics" in a very broad sense) Income inequality, it's a real thing, not a political point. feathe...

Re: Eat like a Peasant?

Urban working class people had a hard time of it until the 1950s or so. Makes you think; we have been relatively well off for quite a short period of time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_history_of_the_United_Kingdom#1900%E2%80%93191 UK GDP was USD5000 or so in 1900 - this translates to an ...

Re: Heating Rooms with no mains power

A few years ago, SWMBO went away for a few days and we had a sudden snowfall so I couldn't go to work. I decided to experiment and turned the heating off. The temperature in our small, 2-up, 2-down mid-terrace house fell quickly to about 16C and stayed there. The boy and I layered up as we got cold....

Re: Who thinks a space earth ship is the ultimate idea?

Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy goes into a lot of detail on the processes of terraforming Mars (and the subsequent politics). It's great fun.
