Re: Organising advice

I'm still buying this and that as I go along, eg yesterday I ordered a maslin pan for making jam, etc, next year (surrounded by countryside heaving with brambles - even in our garden - and we have quite a few fruit trees and bushes which weren't really taken advantage of this year yet again). I ofte...

Re: Food safe IBC's in Devon/SW?

I've looked for IBCs myself and you're right, the shipping is the problem, plus you really have no guarantee of what's been in them. They may have been steam cleaned and look clean but have they really just been used for food grade contents and if not have they removed all traces of the previous co...

Re: keeping food past best before date

I should add that I have a good sense of smell and if it had smelled in any way rancid (the high fat content), I'd have binned it. But just goes to show we throw far too much perfectly good stuff away. This might be slightly off topic, but we have just recently been eating lovely new potatoes grown ...

Re: keeping food past best before date

My Mum taught me to press the tops of cans and if they give more than a tiny bit and "pop", it means air's gotten and the contents are spoiled. Don't buy them, no matter how cheap they are.

Re: keeping food past best before date

I cleared out two larder cupboards on Thursday? and rearranged and made a list of everything. I discovered a couple of things past their BB dates. The trickiest one was an opened jar of crunchy peanut butter. My son's allergic so I keep it on a high shelf and usually forget about it. It's dated BB 0...

Re: Salt

I have 16kg (4 x 1 gallon Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers) in a 5 gallon bucket. I have a few gaps I intend to fill with the small bags I got free with my order, but the 4th bag is stopping me put the lid on properly. There's enough room, but I didn't flatten the last bag out enough and it's too ch...

Re: antibiotics

I have an on-going problem with one of my teeth (which are in remarkably good shape, otherwise, for my age - long may it last). This was due to a botched replacement filling from when I chipped the tooth as a child, which led to me having to have root canal treatment, and the ineptitude of a succes...

Re: Blackout!

Ha, ha! I won't be counting on my neighbours. Much as I like it because they keep to themselves, we have: a surveyor (can tell you what to do, but can't actually do it); a jack of all trades and master of none, whose wife won't let him near anything important; a car breakdown and recovery company - ...
