Re: No Press Cider

Does it matter what the apples are like? We have a couple of small trees and get a reasonable amount (but not excessive), but the apples are not sweet, even though the red ones look very appealing. Making something alcoholic would be a bonus :). My Dad used to make "wine" or other alcohol ...

Re: Canned Food Expiry Dates

Had found one of my cans of tomatoes was 09/13 when I cleared out the cupboards. I've asked everyone in the house to make sure they use stuff in date order and all the cupboards have been cleared and sorted. So I used two cans of tomatoes tonight with 1kg of steak mince to make a double batch of spa...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week

I still remember the washboard (not really used, but kept "just in case") and the huge square top loader washing machine with mangle attached that my Mum had. We also had a pulley, which is something I desperately want again, except my utility room is a wee bit small :(. If we extend, I wi...

Re: Blackout!

Or get a 12volt one like Herself uses when camping Are they any good? I'd always imagined them to be comparable to the older hand driers in public toilets.. makes the right noise but you feel your life wasting away the time they take ;) I don't use hairdriers, but Herself doesn't seem to take that ...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week

Did a shop to get some stuff to test my new vac sealer.. I'm impressed with the how quickly it turns stuff into bricks :) . It evens seals mylar bags quite well. That's good to know about the Mylar bags. I've been using the iron for that, but I often need the help of my daughter to hold the heavy (...

Feisty: Yule is coming, how about dropping This as a little hint to Himself Heck, that's a bit of a monster :). Great idea if you want to invest in one of those gigantic bottles of propane as well, rather than wee bottles of butane? - yes, I've seen all the "they don't work if it's freezing&qu...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week

Decaff - congrats on car :)! Broached first (circumvented prepping) conversation with hubby yesterday and we talked about replacing our gas fire with a multi-fuel burner (the logistics of that are another matter). I also mentioned solar panels and he mentioned a small wind turbine (probably more us...

Re: Blackout!

Seriously going to have to think about getting a wee generator. I can manage the dark with a candle or two, but how will I manage without my hairdryer? :)

Re: Blackout!

Don't think I posted this before, but happened to arrive home a wee while ago just as ambulance delivered very elderly neighbour back after, I discovered, three days in hospital. Cut a long story short, two paramedics lovely but didn't know if lady even had any food in the house. Took over a pint of...
