Re: Radios and walkie talkies

To get 75 miles with CB you are relying on atmospheric conditions to give you the propagation (signal bounce) currently we are at the low point of the 11 year solar cycle & so the band is seldom "open" these days, in 5 or 6 years time it will probably be open most days. The most reliab...

Re: Rapid boil thingys

I have a jetboil minimo & I like it a lot, boils water very quickly & has the wider pot so great for cooking in. Also the minimo has a simmer control so unlike some others it's burner can be controlled.

Only downside I can see with it is the price, but it is great quality.

Re: Which shack in a box?

Hi Appin I wrestled with the same questions & not long after getting my licence I bought a Yaesu FT857D, ive never regretted it. Before that I had only had the use of the cheap & cheerful Baofengs that accompanied me on my daily rounds. At the time I could only justify buying one decent radi...

Re: Antenna Advice

If you want an antenna outside your best to mount some type of vertical colinear, like the Diamond X series, there are a number to choose from & there are many coppies made by other companies, tbe X30 or X50 will work well with the Baofeng & will give a low SWR on both the 2m & 70cm band...

Re: Baofengs

While I was studying for my licence I purchased a couple of Baofengs as I didn't want to throw big money into the subject in case I didn't want to continue with it, I actually invested more money in the antennas than the radios to begin with, which I now consider money well spent. For VHF/UHF base o...

Re: Amateur radio fan saves 12-year-old girl's life

sorry i should have said that they were just an example . i`m not clued up on these at all but trying to find my way . In my opinion the link to the two UV5Rs would get my money, with two radios you can do more, like give one to a partner or travel companion in another vehicle etc, it 2 is better t...

Re: Baofengs

A little problem. I only use a kindle or phone to access net now so don't have a computer as such. So my question is are these baofengs full operational when bought. I keep reading 're programming so is this for more frequencies or channel favourite memories and repeaters only. Or have they to be p...

Re: Combat pants

I am not looking to spend 40 odd quid for some 5.11s ;-) I used to think the same until I bought some, now they are the only ones I buy. Mind you I don't like their lightweight trousers, but the TDU'S are worth every penny, ive had several pairs going back almost 10 years & they are well made &...
